It all starts with an entrance to Banff National Park, tap the garmin and I am in. Canadians are so friendly it’s crazy. The lady in the drive through ticket house asks if it’s for only 1. I say nothing…like who is on the bike and she bursts out laughing….so cool.
I booked a sky walk which is next to a series of 5 glaciers.
The Columbia Icefield is a significant landmark located in the Canadian Rockies, straddling the border between Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. It is one of the largest icefields in North America and feeds several major glaciers.
The Columbia Icefield covers an area of about 325 square kilometers (125 square miles) and reaches an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). It is a primary water source for numerous rivers, contributing to the hydrology of the region.
One of the most popular attractions within the Columbia Icefield is the Athabasca Glacier. Visitors have the opportunity to take guided tours onto the glacier, where they can learn about glaciology, explore crevasses, and experience the awe-inspiring ice formations up close.
Additionally, the Columbia Icefield is accessible via the Icefields Parkway, which is often regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the world. This renowned highway stretches for approximately 230 kilometers (143 miles) and offers breathtaking views of towering mountains, pristine lakes, and stunning glaciers.
The Columbia Icefield is not only a remarkable natural phenomenon but also serves as an important research site for studying climate change and glacial retreat. It provides valuable insights into the impacts of global warming on icefields and their associated ecosystems.
Visiting the Columbia Icefield offers a chance to witness the grandeur of nature and appreciate the immense beauty of glaciers. It’s important to note that due to the sensitive nature of these ice formations and the potential hazards involved, it’s recommended to explore the area with experienced guides and adhere to safety guidelines.

Before I got to the sky walk I just had to stop to appreciate this place, 1st glacier behind me, mountains getting massive..

Oh dear my turn……ache feet I get. 280 straight down, only 3 layers of glass between me and confirm the theory of gravity…

Glaciers everywhere. Fun fact: ice melt to the Easy of the main glacier flows into the Atlantic, just to the West into the Pacific and 1 glacial melt goes into the Arctic…..tomorrow I leave this beautiful place and head to cowboy country. Jasper is a very cool place to stay over.
